How to Run in Cold Weather: Stay Warm, Safe, and Strong

Cold weather doesn’t have to put your running plans on ice. With the right approach, winter runs can be energising, peaceful, and even more rewarding than summer miles. The key is knowing how to stay warm without overheating and staying visible when daylight hours are short.

1. Layer Smartly

Dress in light, breathable layers so you can regulate your temperature. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, depending on what run you are going for you could opt for a thermal layer, but you don't want to get too hot! You can then look to add another later on top, our men’s SOLIS Ray short sleeve top is a perfect example of a light and breathable layer that adds warmth and utility with its reflective features. Finally, if the weather is truly miserable, it might be worth adding a lightweight wind breaker. But remember, you're going to get warmer as your heart rate increases and you don't want to be carrying around extra clothes in your hand!

2. Protect Your Extremities

Your head, hands, and feet lose heat the fastest. Wear a thermal hat or headband, gloves, and warm socks designed for running in cold conditions. Oh, and try to avoid any puddles. There’s nothing worse than cold, wet feet!

3. Don’t Skip the Warm-Up

Cold muscles are more prone to injury. Begin with a dynamic warm-up, indoors if you can, before heading out, so your body’s already primed for movement when you hit the cold air.

4. Stay Visible in Low Light

Winter days are short, meaning more runs happen in the dark. Wear reflective running gear and consider adding a headlamp or reflective accessories for maximum safety. Check our Original Collection of reflective run wear to make sure you Run Bright!

5. Adjust Your Expectations

Cold weather can make your runs feel harder, especially in wind or icy conditions. Focus on effort over pace and be flexible with your training schedule if conditions are unsafe.

Final Thought: Running in cold weather is as much about preparation as it is about grit. Dress right, warm up, and stay visible and you’ll be able to enjoy your runs no matter the temperature.
